September 11-13, 2009
(Friday evening - Sunday afternoon)
Saturday: Fern Foray to Yellow Aster Butte. The subalpine meadows and serpentine slopes of Yellow Aster Butte may be home to the greatest diversify of ferns of any spot in the Pacific Northwest. (Yes, even more than Perry Creek.) We can expect to see 30+ species of ferns and lycophytes, including the elusive Green Spleenwort (Asplenium trichomanes-ramosum), the serpentine endemic Shasta Fern (Polystichum lemmonii), Kruckeberg's Holly Fern (P. kruckebergii), and a few interesting fern hybrids. If conditions are right, we may also be lucky enough to see large numbers of moonworts. (Five species of Botrychium have been recorded at Yellow Aster Butte.) This is a moderately strenuous, 7-mile round-trip hike with a total elevation gain of 2200 ft. The Yellow Aster Butte trail enters the Mount Baker wilderness, so group size is limited to 12.
Sunday: Fall Color and Ferns at Mount Baker. There are many opportunities for short day hikes at Mount Baker. With the help of our leader, the group will get to decide which hike to take. Any choice will provide fabulous scenery and lots of ferns. If you didn't get your fill of mountain blueberries the day before, there will be plenty more at Mount Baker. Additional ferns, not seen at YAB, may include Cryptogramma cascadensis, Phegopteris connectilis, and Thelypteris quelpertensis.
Cost: $165.00 includes two nights lodging in Glacier, WA, plus breakfast and lunch Saturday and Sunday. Saturday dinner is not included, but we will make reservations for the group at an excellent restaurant in Glacier.
Pre-registration is required for this trip by contacting Tim McNitt at 360-714-9474, or mcnitt@acies.com.

Perry Creek Field Trip
Saturday, August 2, 2008
The Perry Creek-Mount Forgotten Trail (No. 711) boasts approximately 35 species of ferns and lycophytes. The trail is located roughly 75 miles east of Seattle and is the best place to view ferns in Washington State! The hike to the falls is 2 miles one way, with an elevation gain of about 1,000 feet. The first part of August is an ideal time to take this fantastic hike. Be on the look out for Asplenium trichomanes, Asplenium viride, Polystichum andersonii, Polystichum lemmonii, Woodsia scopulina, Polypodium amorphum, and many species of Botrychium, just to name a few.
Relax and enjoy the amazing scenery as we enjoy our lunch at the falls.
