Hardy Fern Foundation Summer Garden Tour

Looking for horticultural inspiration???

You're invited to join our Hardy Fern Foundation Garden Tour
on August 7, 2010.

Spend a day visiting and enjoying some unique and beautiful local gardens including...

The Peterson/Steffen Garden
- This small suburban garden is filled with lots of fabulous plants that highlight the eclectic tastes of the owners.  This garden is not often open to the public so don't miss this rare chance to see it!

Edgewood Gardens - Edgewood Garden, located in Edgewood, Washington, is the current project of Ilga Jansons and Michael Dryfoos. This is the second large-scale garden they have created. This one is on 32 acres, centered on a large, Northwest Contemporary house, with lots of sun and a stunning view of Mt. Rainier. When Ilga and Mike purchased the property, at the end of 2003, there was little by way of a garden. The structures and plantings in place now have all been developed since that time. The evolution of the garden is ongoing, and there are new things to see every year!

Old Goat Farm - In December of 2004, quite by accident, Greg Graves and Gary Waller found this beautiful little place while plant shopping with their good friend Linda. It is located just outside of Orting, WA, tucked below Mt. Rainier. They fell in love with this place, and by March of 2005, were the owners of Old Goat Farm. It is kind of a throwback to a simpler time with its 100-year-old farmhouse and cute barn and nursery. The garden is dotted with topiaries which give it a magical quality.

The Chase Garden - Located near Graham, Washington, just one hour south of Seattle on the way to Mt. Rainier, is a special 4 1/2 acre garden. The Chase Garden sits on a bluff overlooking the Puyallup River Valley and features spectacular views of Mt Rainier.

Ticket cost is $20 which includes a boxed lunch and all garden admissions. A map with driving directions to the gardens will be provided.

We will meet at the Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden in Federal Way at 9:30 am and carpool from there.
Send RSVP's by Wednesday, August 4th to Michelle Bundy at hff@rhodygarden.org or 206-271-7470.

Ferns of Yellow Aster Butte
and Mount Baker

September 11-13, 2009
(Friday evening - Sunday afternoon)

Saturday: Fern Foray to Yellow Aster Butte. The subalpine meadows and serpentine slopes of Yellow Aster Butte may be home to the greatest diversify of ferns of any spot in the Pacific Northwest. (Yes, even more than Perry Creek.) We can expect to see 30+ species of ferns and lycophytes, including the elusive Green Spleenwort (Asplenium trichomanes-ramosum), the serpentine endemic Shasta Fern (Polystichum lemmonii), Kruckeberg's Holly Fern (P. kruckebergii), and a few interesting fern hybrids. If conditions are right, we may also be lucky enough to see large numbers of moonworts. (Five species of Botrychium have been recorded at Yellow Aster Butte.) This is a moderately strenuous, 7-mile round-trip hike with a total elevation gain of 2200 ft. The Yellow Aster Butte trail enters the Mount Baker wilderness, so group size is limited to 12.

Sunday: Fall Color and Ferns at Mount Baker. There are many opportunities for short day hikes at Mount Baker. With the help of our leader, the group will get to decide which hike to take. Any choice will provide fabulous scenery and lots of ferns. If you didn't get your fill of mountain blueberries the day before, there will be plenty more at Mount Baker. Additional ferns, not seen at YAB, may include Cryptogramma cascadensis, Phegopteris connectilis, and Thelypteris quelpertensis.

Cost: $165.00 includes two nights lodging in Glacier, WA, plus breakfast and lunch Saturday and Sunday. Saturday dinner is not included, but we will make reservations for the group at an excellent restaurant in Glacier.

Pre-registration is required for this trip by contacting Tim McNitt at 360-714-9474, or mcnitt@acies.com.

Hardy Fern Foundation/America Fern Society Perry Creek Hike

Perry Creek Field Trip
Saturday, August 2, 2008

The Perry Creek-Mount Forgotten Trail (No. 711) boasts approximately 35 species of ferns and lycophytes. The trail is located roughly 75 miles east of Seattle and is the best place to view ferns in Washington State! The hike to the falls is 2 miles one way, with an elevation gain of about 1,000 feet. The first part of August is an ideal time to take this fantastic hike. Be on the look out for Asplenium trichomanes, Asplenium viride, Polystichum andersonii, Polystichum lemmonii, Woodsia scopulina, Polypodium amorphum, and many species of Botrychium, just to name a few.

Relax and enjoy the amazing scenery as we enjoy our lunch at the falls.
